about

The Villa Capri Los Angeles, California

A few years ago one of my musical heros Neil Hannon wrote me a very complimentary letter in which he advised me against over- producing demos - "record companies like to think they've found a diamond in the rough" he wrote. I probably should have listened! These albums are all very different so take your pick, listen and enjoy! The Villa Capri. ... more

Tales From The Cockleshell

'Neath swinging lanterns sailors tell
Tall tales from The Cockleshell

Once upon a time at sea
A sailor cried “oh woe is me
I’d rather have no breath
And sooner succumb to death
Than live without my Isobel”

But while he pined upon the ship
His love was in another’s grip
She plied an ancient trade
To mariners who paid
A pretty sum for Isobel
In a house called The Cockleshell

For Isobel was fair with beautiful dark blue eyes
Although she was the devil in disguise
To many a sailor man who heard her siren cries
She was the very devil in disguise

On Friday night a man appeared
A brute that everybody feared
With blood beneath his nails
He reeked of rum and jails
To pledge his love to Isobel

Mad Jacob was this killer’s name
And proudly he sang of his fame
“O I have killed and robbed
But while in jail have sobbed
So many tears in that dark cell
For my beloved Isobel”

My Isobel whose fair, with wonderful silky thighs
for though I am a man that all despise
I plan to take her away from here this very night
and then forever we’ll be man and wife

But Jacob was deluded and
Completely failed to understand
Her loyalty couldn’t last
His bride to be was fast
And had poor thing to makes ends meet
Or she’d be back upon the street

And hard at work she was indeed
And just about to gather speed
When Jacob approached her door
And heard her cry ‘more more’
He felt a jealous anger swell
And placed a single foot in hell

My Isobel is fair, with wonderful silky thighs
But if behind this wooden door I spies
A salty sailor then I’ll gouge out both his eyes
And tear her cheating heart out for me prize

Inside that room the blood did spill
As Jacob did the sailor kill
And then poor Isobel
who whispered as she fell

It’s true that I am fair with wonderful dark blue eyes
But I am not the devil in disguise
You sailors are all daft your myths are all just lies
O I am not the devil…

No! I am but flesh and bone and human tissue see
I’m not some slippery siren of the sea
And now your stupid superstitious spiteful jealousy
Has gone and done me in
So i’ll see you all in hell
Then she went and died she died did Isobel

Neath swinging lanterns sailors tell
Tall tales from The Cockleshell
They say that Davy Jones
Himself lies with her bones

Track Name: Brother Gorilla
Brother Gorilla

Brother gorilla spends every day
With all the other gorillas and they
Don't want no monkeys or apes in their trees
They don't like chimpanzees

They don't like to travel, don't want to host
They think civilisation ends at the coast
And with misspelled placards
Some afternoons
They stomp and shout "send back baboons!”

We’re better off on our own they say
And as long as we’re still breathing
We’ll find each wretched emigre
And wave as we watch them leaving

Brother gorilla not in a zoo
But walking bolt upright among me and you
Banishing their brothers and building a wall
Unaware that they’re brothers at all

Brother gorilla…
Brother gorilla…

Oh we’re far better off on our own they claim
In the local town hall meeting
And we’ve decided we need someone else to blame
For the miserable lives we’re leading

Brother gorilla not in a zoo
But walking bolt upright among me and you
Banishing their brothers and building a wall
Unaware that they’re brothers at all

Brother gorilla…
Brother gorilla…

Track Name: The Accused
The Accused

Sometime before we met
I used to drink to forget
Then late last night in a drinking shop
There came the moment i forgot
Now I don’t recollect
Anything before
But how I wish I could recall

You asked me if i hid
Hid from the fight you said
Safe in the bosom of the countryside
Cowardly living while brave men died
I bear these scars although
Why i do not know
And how I wish I could recall

Perhaps when the revolution came
I too donned the uniform to take my aim
The resistance and watched the traitors fall
How I wish I could recall

You asked if i had read
Books that were banned you said
Written by those who satirise
In an effort to destabilise
I’d answer you although
I simply do not know
But how i wish i could recall

Perhaps i informed on artists whose
Subversive née coercive verses stand accused
But don’t they write in post-coital scrawl?
Oh how i wish i could recall

You asked me if I sang
Songs for the rebels you said
With me old guitar was I in cahoots
And where did i get these fancy boots
I want to say i paid
For them fair and square
How I wish I could recall

Perhaps I do sing but as you hear
I’m no Caruso and these boots right here
Are comfortable if a size too small
How I wish I could recall

You tell me that I’ll hang
Hang by a rope you say
Dragged through the crowd in the old town square
Toward the scaffold with a final prayer
Unless i get a grip
Remedy me memory slip
Well then perhaps i do recall

Perhaps I am guilty of these crimes
But your honour we agreed i would pay a fine
Must the courtroom bear witness to your fall
Well alright as i recall

The fact is we have met
It’s all on this cassette
T’was late last night in a drinking shop
We drank together have you forgotten
I gave you a thousand quid
A whole lot of money i did
You said you’d set me free
Your honour don’t blame me
For it was you could not recall

Track Name: My Caravan
MY CARAVAN

My caravan
A vision in beige called Endevour
We trundle and traipse together
We meander across the land

You should see her in the middle lane she comes alive
Swaying gracefully behind my trusty Renault Five
Everyone shows admiration
By beeping their horns as we drive

Caravanners have a special place in English hearts
Next to paper cuts and flies upon their apple tarts
they glare and stare on the motorways
And sometimes they call us old farts

Now you hotel dwellers you’re so quick to tell us
How Rio or Rome are so fine
But I’d take a good pitch just outside of Ipswich
In my favourite caravan site every time

My caravan
A vision in beige called Endevour
We ramble we amble together
We dawdle across the land
My caravan
Will woo you, imbue you with joy yet
It does have a chemical toilet
That has to be emptied by hand

You can meet folk from every other walk of life
But generally you meet an old fella and his wife
Sitting and staring on deckchairs
For two to three weeks at a time

Caravanners like to think that when they do pass on
That at the pearly gates there’ll be a sign and thereupon
Directions to the caravan park
Just outside new Jerusalem

So until we arrive there we’ll stay in our deckchairs
Despite the continual rain
And although it’s still pouring it’s the deafening snoring
From a whole field of caravans that drives me insane

My caravan
A vision in beige called Endevour
We pootle, we tootle together
And meander across the land
My caravan
We’re both old and beige and we’re listless
So I’ll probably sell it by Christmas
And move to Azerbaija
